Hello, I am Andreas Laffert Tamayo, a sociologist and doctoral researcher at the Cluster of Excellence “The Politics of Inequality” at the University of Konstanz. I hold a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Chile and an M.A. in Sociology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
From a comparative political economy perspective, I study how the commodification of key areas of welfare and social reproduction reshapes inequality, how people come to view this commodification as legitimate, and to what extent these dynamics depend on social stratification and on political and economic contexts. More broadly, my research interests include social stratification, social policy, welfare state transformation, and the political economy of inequality. My work is primarily quantitative, drawing on multilevel and longitudinal analyses of observational data, causal inference strategies, and survey experiments. I follow reproducible research practices, using R, Git, and other open-source tools in both individual and collaborative projects.
Previously, I worked as a research assistant on Fondecyt project No. 1250518, “Market Justice and Deservingness of Social Welfare”, and on the Chilean partner team of Wealth and Social Cohesion from a Relational Perspective (WESOREL), as well as on several other Fondecyt-funded projects. I also worked as a quantitative analyst at Chile’s Subsecretariat of Labour, coordinated the Social Cohesion Observatory of the Center for the Study of Conflict and Social Cohesion (COES), and served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate statistics courses in Sociology at the University of Chile.
I was born and raised in Pedro Aguirre Cerda, a historic district of Santiago, and I now live in Konstanz, Germany. Outside academia, I enjoy reading, photography, sports, and drinking mate.
